After staring at a blank wall for over a year, I was craving color and a summer vibe. From a white walls to tropical aesthetic, I decided to give my dining room a makeover.

What gave me inspiration? The paintings on my wall from Cuba. I wanted the design of the room to flow with the paintings. I wanted there to be bright colors in the room but I did not want it to be overwhelming.

So why not start by designing one statement piece? Our dining cabinet. I wanted that cabinet to cover the whole wall and the color to match the car in the painting. The top of the cabinet would be stained to match our dining room table. And the handles? They have a gold accent. This was the pop of color that the room needed.
I had our old hardware for the shelves on the wall but they were black. This was not going to match the design of the room. So I found some gold spray paint that matched the handles on the cabinets. And it was perfect! Next, we stained the shelves to also match the color of our table.

How did we decided the layout of the shelves? I had my husband mark on the wall where the studs were on the wall. Then I marked the wall with painters tape the length of each shelf and where I wanted them to go.

The more I thought about this tropical aesthetic, I thought about leaves, natural textures, and bold colors. I found some leaf stencils on Amazon that I thought would be really cool to use for the wall. I looked at different greens that I could use that would add more color to the room but not make it exhausting to see everyday. When I started to paint the wall, I didn't really have a plan. It was also my first time painting with stencils so I took my time with it. I would paint one row and step back and then paint the next row. It took me all evening to paint but I think it came out perfect.
Now onto the final touches. I had purchased our cream curtains when we moved in but they were a very tight fit. When I finally decided to go to Home Goods to get more curtains, they didn't have those anymore. It had also been a year since I had purchased the curtains... but I as I combed through the curtains Home Goods I questioned, why did the curtains have to match? I found these nice green curtains that would match the theme of the room, why not mix and match them? They were a big longer so I hemmed to be the same length of the cream curtains and I used the extra fabric to created a tie for curtains.
My husband got me a wine rack but the color of just did not match the tropical theme. So, I decided to spray paint it a light green to match the aesthetic. On a side note, I did learn the hard way that I should have primed the wine rack first! But we live and we learn.

The light fixture. It took me months to find the perfect light fixture. I found this one on Amazon that just matched the tropical theme. I was a little skeptical if it was going to be big enough, but like Goldie Locks, it was just the right size. The quality of it made it even more beautiful.
Our dining room was once a room of just white walls, now
its a tropical paradise.
